| Playing Ax Suited |
| Written by John Fava |

I love playing Ax(x for purposes of this article will mean a J or lower) suited but you really have to think about every situation you play it in.
I often play Ax suited in the early and middle stages of a game and usually play any ace heads up but there are many times you have to fold this great looking hand. I will always limp with Ax suited in the early and middle stages unless there is a raise in front of me. Then it is time to fold. If there is a 2 bet and I am in the big or small blind I will usually call because of the potential of this hand but any raise bigger than that and I am folding. This hand is usually a fold for me approaching the bubble and even when I just make the money I am careful not to play it to any raises. You see I hate playing A x unsuited. To me this hand can get you into so much trouble it's not even worth a limp. I have seen way to many times players call all the way to the river with A 5 and get beat with A 8. When looking at Ax unsuited you really have to think about fold equity and simply discard it. Now, if I limp and see a flop I'm usually folding to any bet should 1 or less of my suit hits. I have even folded my A rag suited if the A hits and there is a big bet in front of me. At this point I am always looking ahead and thinking of fold equity. How much is it going to cost me to see 2 more cards and what are my chances of winning the hand. Well if you only hit 1 card of your suit your chances are not good. What happens if you hit 2 cards of your suit on the flop. Well if there is no betting then I would definitely take the free card(s). If there is betting I might call a min bet but certainly nothing more. At this point the potential of hitting the flush has to be given some weight so that is why I would call a min bet but after that I believe it is not worth it to call. I love playing Ax suited because of the potential of the hand. If you get the flush you know you have the nut flush. I remember a few times beating lesser flushes ... those are great ! Sometimes I have had the luck to flop the nut flush. Those can easily turn into a double up if your opponent has caught something. Even someone with a K in the flush suit might chase to get his K high flush. At this point it's all good ! Yes the potential of a hand like Ax suited is BIG but I constantly remind myself that it can also get you into BIG trouble. |
